“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with my eye.” (Psalm 32:8)
The wonderful thing about God is that His love is so amazing. Just the sheer gift of His Son, Jesus, dying for our salvation is in and of itself more than we could have ever asked for or expected. The fact that God, in Jesus, would leave the confines of the heavenly spaces and meet with us in our messy lives is a true testimony of love ….
But God’s love, in actuality, transcends every aspect of our lives. You see, the one thing that we have to realize is that God desires us to be with Him in eternity one day. There is no question about that. He desires this so much that not only did He take the penalty for our sin, but He also walks with us and shows us how to walk successfully on this journey of faith ….
The ultimate goal of the Christian is to become more Christlike until we are glorified with Him in death. That may seem like a daunting task if it were not for the fact that God gave us the “secret to success” so to speak. He has given us the exact instructions and guidance through His Word that we need to thrive and have life more abundantly ….
When we accept Jesus’ lordship in our lives, God gives us instructions on how to live just as He has called us to live. That is the thing that David points out in this small verse in Psalm 32. In the voice of God, we are reminded that God will teach us and lead us in the ways we should go so that on the day we finally come face to face with Jesus, we will be able to hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).
How does God teach us and instruct us? I would suggest there are some very key and critical ways in which He does. Let us ponder this ….
1). Jesus ~ The primary way that God teaches us how to walk in His ways is by giving us a living example in His Son. Jesus was the true Word of God made flesh and He came and dwelt amongst us. He showed us how to live a life that was truly fulfilling, not relying on the things of this world to provide us with happiness, but through how to trust wholeheartedly in Him alone ….
He showed us that even in the face of sin, we could prevail through His power. We were shown that even when we do sin, we have an advocate who goes on our behalf to the Father in order that we may be forgiven completely. He showed us that the way to enter the Kingdom was to be completely faithful and obedient to God in all that we are: Body, mind, and spirit. He taught us that the Kingdom of God was won not by power or sword, but by our willingness to sacrifice. Most importantly, He taught us that the Kingdom was about love ….
2). Scriptures ~ God has given us His Word contained in the Old and New Testaments, providing us with that which we need to have in order to know what God expects of us. The reality is God’s Word is the Word of life and as we study to learn more of it, God is revealed more and more to us and we see how to travel this road of faith in a way that is worthy of Him ….
3). The Apostles ~ The lives of the apostles are living testimonies to us on how to faithfully live this life. God teaches us through their writings and witness. Were they perfect? Did they always get it right? Of course not. But they left us a witness to show us that God’s love, grace, and mercy is a very real transformative power that provides a profound witness to just how amazing God’s love for us is ….
4). The Ten Commandments and Sermon on the Mount ~ Now there are those who believe that the Ten Commandments no longer carry merit because Jesus has come and the age of grace has arrived. However, Jesus Himself said that He did not come to abolish the Law, but rather to fulfill it. The reality is this: In the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount everything is spelled out for how we are supposed to live as people who have been identified as God’s own …
Will we always get it right? No. That is why we have also been given the final piece: the Holy Ghost. That, which of God living in us will guide us and lead us. He will reveal God’s plan, open God’s Word and intercede for us in prayer. It is the power of God within us that helps us to know the truth and that truth is what will indeed set us free. It is through the indwelt Holy Ghost that we are empowered to speak boldly in the face of opposition, to proclaim God’s truth in the heat of persecution, and to find unfathomable peace and comfort for the heaviest burdens while walking the path that God has called us to on each of our journeys ….
I praise God for His love for us – a love that is able to instruct us on how to live this life in the fullest and richest of ways. And this is personified in Jesus Himself, Who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)
“Seek ye the Lord while He may be found; call ye upon Him while He is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
