Only eternity will reveal the sad horrible effects of television and movies on the minds of Christians in this present evil age we live in. We have no reason to watch things that defile our minds. To say, ‘It does not effect me’ is a very poor excuse indeed! The writers have an agenda which is to promote evil in the name of entertainment. What is the content of the programs or movies you watch… Are they wholesome or unclean?
Not every program on radio or TV is wicked, but most of them are and you need to have discernment and discretion concerning what you allow in your mind. This includes books and magazines. We have to guard our hearts with all diligence and use self-control …
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)
According to (Jeremiah 10:2) we must not ‘learn the way of the heathen.’ Do you heed this warning from God? Constant watching of TV programs that are full of crime, violence, hatred, sexual impurity, profanity, and mocking of God dulls your conscience and implants sinful thoughts into your mind. It is the very opposite of the command to “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Think how this affects the minds of your children, not to mention your very own mind …
To watch the glorification of evil and sin is wrong for the child of God, who is to set his/her affections on things above, and look towards heavenly righteous things. (Colossians 3:1-3)
The family hour is now prime time TV; where instead of gathering the family together for a time of Worship and instruction in the Word of God which renews the mind, parents shove the kiddos off in front of the TV’s or Nintendo so they can not be bothered ….
People live in a fantasy world that is unreal and makes sin look good! It’s hard to be a dedicated born again Christian if you are devoted to the idol of TV instead of being fully devoted to a holy God!
Harsh, you say? Truth, I say.
God must be 1st place in our lives! Above TV, music, video games, or anything that is a popular past-time. Sadly, the most popular programs are the most ungodly, and what used to be wholesome and acceptable for our children such as Walt Disney, is now conformed to this world and promoting homosexuality, violence, and unhealthy morals.
Television is very distracting, time wasting, and causes temptations and the lowering of the holy standards of God. Watching a TV program that ‘calls evil good and good evil’ will cause you to compromise with evil and to tolerate evil since you allow yourself to be entertained by evil….
Truth be told, if you’re watching it — you’re condoning it, and to a young child in your home or under your care; to condone it means to their impressionable minds that it is acceptable, and perfectly okay.
This is very harmful and it is not innocent fun! TV is a deadly distraction that kills the spiritual atmosphere in your life and home.
You cannot easily sit with those who mock the Lord with filthy suggestive jokes and language and grieve the Holy Spirit and live wholly to the Lord at the same time. How can you justify calling yourself a child of God, Whom you know is holy, when you watch vulgar and sexually explicit shows or comedy’s on TV, and laugh at them, and not consider yourself defiled. Lies from the pits of hell …. and to stand in a circle of “friends” while they tell dirty jokes, and remain silent?? Do you not think this grieves your Father in heaven? This is sin….
“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17).
Sin is portrayed on TV not as sin, but as “normal and acceptable” and God forbid that we approve of this portrayal of sin. Do you laugh at what God hates? Do you justify and rationalize that it’s all in good fun? Do you go to church on Sunday after partying all night Saturday?
Even better question, do you go to pray after just finishing up watching that newly released comedy that kept you laughing through it, despite the vulgar language and sexual innuendos?
Most TV viewing cannot be pleasing to The Spirit! It may pull and attract the flesh, but we are commanded to deny worldly lusts: “teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world” (Titus 2:12)
To look on and enjoy the things He has redeemed you from is very offensive to the Son of God. To allow your life to be cheapened by such garbage is to abuse the grace of God. Where is the love for worship, for fellowship with a holy God and renewing your mind with the Truth? Where is the fire of the Holy Ghost that should be convicting you within and searing your conscience from these seducing spirits? And that is exactly what your TV is full of: seducing spirits meant to entice your flesh and provide pleasure in ungodly manner.
“Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils”
(1 Timothy 4:1).
We should be in a close intimate relationship with a Holy God and communing with the indwelling Holy Ghost to allow Him to enable you with the discernment needed to filter the proper images through your spirit. This means simply that you should be repulsed by the garbage on television today, and since the days are evil, we all need to be praying more than we’re watching TV!
There are appropriate channels and avenues, should you just feel the absolute need for visual entertainment. There are many great Christian movies for adults and children to be found through Netflix, Purflix, or other religious programming. There are new releases of feature films, dramas, musicals, comedies, children’s and inspirational movies all to be found under the Faith & Spirituality categories; at a very low and reasonable cost to you. The most important reason to choose DVD is because you can choose. You decide what you and your family watch, and God is honored and glorified by your choices.
May you choose wisely, and be wary of what you allow into your spirit now. Our redemption draweth nigh …..
