“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
Sometimes it’s difficult discover God’s will for our life. We want to do His will, but there are so many different paths to take .… how can we know? Sometimes, though our heart may be in the right place, and our intentions pure, we can slip from doing His will into doing our own. How can we be assured that we are walking in His will and not our own? Let’s look at the following S-T-E-P-S in order to understand the best direction for you:
S- Seek intimacy with God
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” (John 15:4)
Do we really want God more than we want His direction? Intimacy with God doesn’t happen overnight. True intimacy is developed over time with honest effort. Faith will compel us to set aside prayer time and Bible study to know God better …..
T- Take in godly counsel ~
“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.” (Proverbs 19:20)
We can examine and follow the advice of our godly mentors. They should be people of spiritual maturity without the pretense of religious hypocrisy. A godly advisor will always want God’s best for us over their personal preferences ..
E- Examine your circumstances, but don’t rely on them.
“For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”
Sometimes God can speak through our circumstances, but this calls for wisdom. The Holy Spirit will enlighten our hearts to the correct scripture for our situation. Our circumstances should always take second place to the leading of the Spirit and scriptures …..
P- Pursue steps of faith
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” (James 2:26)
At some point in time, we have to take that step of faith by trusting in God. At first, we may be at times wobbly and unsure, but as we trust in the Scriptures; we will find peace in moving forward. The Lord will lead us as we lean on Him …..
S- Sort out the bumps along the way.
“Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.”
No path will be smooth everyday, all of the time. We need the bumps along the way to keep us close to the Savior. We remember that God is with us no matter what …. even if you get off the road, He will steer you back in the right path …..
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
Has God ever dropped a big dream or vision into your heart? It might feel kind of scary because we know that it’s bigger than us or our abilities. We don’t always want to tell people about the dream because we feel that they may ridicule it. Sometimes, we don’t even share with others because we don’t want to fail either and have them disappointed in us …..
However, when we are walking in obedience to His Word and following His ways, the Lord will lead us to experience a deeper relationship with Him. As we walk closer to God, we are more prone to hear His voice prompting us towards a greater purpose in life than just existing and we are better able to discern His will and walk the path that He has planned for us ….
What if God wants to do a great work in our life in building the kingdom of God with our gifts and talents? What if God wants to use us to drop seeds of hope and encouragement into the lives of those He placed around us? What if God wants us to take steps of faith even though we can’t clearly see the way before us? What if God wants to do amazing things in our lives? …… I know, a whole lot of “what-ifs” … yet often we miss the purpose that God has called us to because we step out of His will into our own, not even realizing it. This is why it is vital that we maintain a continual communication with our Lord through daily prayer and study of His Word, and that we continually walk in the Spirit and be guided by the Spirit ….
Doubts, fears, and hesitations will constantly show up in this Christian journey of purpose. However, their influence and power over our minds is diminished as long as we are connected to the Lord. Our response is to humbly accept His calling and purpose instead of focusing on our circumstances, earthly treasures or our own dreams and desires ….
Our attention should be squarely fixed on His abilities and not our inabilities. As we search the Scriptures for guidance, share our dreams with godly mentors, and pray intently for wisdom, the Lord will show us what He can do with those who follow after Him with a pure heart
Dear Lord, I will follow where You lead me. I pray for Your guidance in living my life according to Your will. Show me the path that you would have me to take. Give me wisdom, understanding, and the needed discernment to know the right next step to take. I know that You are guiding me to a path that is according to Your will for my life. Lead me in the ways of truth according to Your Word. Show me Your glory and continue to use me according to Your will, and may Your plans be established; not mine. In Jesus name, Amen.
