The Bible often speaks of the importance of faith in knowing God. For example, (Ephesians 2:8) teaches, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” And then also;
(1 Corinthians 13:13) adds, “And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” But why does God require faith?
One way to answer why God requires faith is because He is our Heavenly Father. Our relationship to Him is similar to other relationships in the sense that it includes trust in the other person, time together, love, and respect. Because we cannot fully know another person, let alone an infinite God, all relationships require some degree of faith (trust). God is our Father and it takes faith to believe that He loves us and that He provides for all of our needs…..
Faith is also important because God is not visible to humanity. He is the unseen. (Hebrews 11:1) teaches, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” We cannot see God (John 1:18). However, we have faith in Him that provides assurance …..
Faith is not only vital for a strong walk but more so necessary to please God. (Hebrews 11:6) notes this,
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.” Not only does faith please God, it leads to reward ~ eternal life, heavenly rewards, and experience of fullness of life on earth (John 10:10).
Faith is important in order for believers to obey the Lord. For example, Adam and Eve had been given a command; to not eat from a particular fruit (Genesis 2:15-17). Because their faith wavered regarding this command, they ate the forbidden fruit and sinned. Contrastingly, (James 2:23) shares, “And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.”
Wow, because he believed, what he couldn’t see with his eyes, yet believed in his heart by faith it was counted unto him and he was called God’s friend. How awesome is that ~ to be considered a friend by the Creator of the whole world??? Oh how I pray to be considered as such …..
God requires faith because it allows humans the ability to “choose” or reject Him. Yes, you do have a choice in the matter. God loves you but He will not force anyone to love Him back. Without the ability to make choices, humanity would cease to be human as we know it. Because people can choose to have faith or not to have faith, there is a way for God to know those who have believed in Him and those who have not ….
Faith in God is not “blind faith” as some argue. Instead, it is a choice based on the available information. The Bible, the created world, the changed lives of believers, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost, and many other ways God operates in our world provide sufficient evidence for people to choose faith in God. As Jesus taught in (Luke 16:31), “If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.”
In closing; you have a choice today: choose life or choose death. Simply put, either hot or cold. As it is written; “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” (Revelations 3:15-16). You have a choice to believe, by faith; that the promises of God are all truth, and if so, then you also have the choice to make the necessary adjustments to your life beginning right now. The Lord WILL BE returning soon to gather His people home. As written and revealed to us; “For this we say unto you by the Word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17). This is an absolute promise! And the choice is yours to make today, because no man, no one but Father God knows when that hour will come ~ “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (Matthew 24:35-36). Choose life. Choose faith, choose surrender then choose obedience ….. otherwise it will come as a thief comes in the night, and the final outcome??? “and the door was shut ….. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
Let us pray ~
Father, as we recall the steadfast faith and hope in God that so many of the great cloud of witnesses displayed in (Hebrews 11) and elsewhere, we pray that we too, may follow their example and place our entire faith in Your precious Word. May we develop an ever deepening trust in You, knowing that Your Word is faithful and true. May we be nourished by the Word of God day by day and be refreshed with rivers of living water that stream into our hearts from above, so that whatsoever we do will be pleasing to the Lord and glorify His name. Thank You that in Christ we have been forgiven of all our sins and delivered from the power of sin in our lives and may we pass on a trust in the Lord Jesus to our children and children’s children, so that in the next generations a living trust in God may be their witness to the world and faith in His word may be a testimony that will also pass on to all their children. Please keep us standing firm in truth of God’s Word, that has been delivered to us by our Father in heaven, and keep us stedfast and true to all that we have learned of Your grace and mercy, so that our lives may demonstrate an ever deepening love for You, until that glorious day, when we are take to be with You in heaven and we will be known as we are known. This we pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
God is with us ….
