“Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: so shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs 3:3-6).
Our opening verse is a a strong advisement to begin the trusting process later instructed us; “let not mercy and truth forsake thee” ….. That is God’s mercy in promising, and His truth in performing that which He says that He will do. To write them on our heart is to live up to them, keep up sole interest in them, and take the comfort of them. We must trust in the Lord with all our hearts, believing that He is able and wise to do what is best. Those who truly know themselves, find their own understandings a broken reed, which, if they lean upon, will fail. This is why it is written “lean not to thine own understanding” …..
If we follow our own thoughts and resonings, we are ultimately going to fall short. We must trust and beg God to direct us in every case, though it may seem quite plain that our thought processes can solve our problems. “In all thy ways acknowledge Him” isn’t a suggestion and it means in our ways that prove pleasant, in which we gain our point, we must acknowledge God with thankfulness. In all our ways that prove uncomfortable, and that are hedged up with thorns, we must acknowledge Him with submission. In ALL of our ways, plain and simple we acknowledge Him with our obedience. It is promised, “He shall direct thy paths” so that our ways, our steps will be ordered and guided by Him, and in this we can have faith ….
A very important lesson from this is that even when we cannot see how turning from our way to God’s way is going to work, we must trust Him and put our priorities fully, that is completely and wholeheartedly into His hands. When we learn to obey in faith, He always opens the doors and He always provides a way! We can have full trust and faith that His ways are better than our ways and He will hold us up and provide all our needs! If you are faced with a seemingly unsolvable problem, you can turn to God with your whole heart and He will reveal the solution!
In short, not our reason and understanding at best, and much less as carnal and unsanctified, but the Word of God only is our rule of judgment, and the standard of our faith and practice; and to that we should have recourse and be directed by it, and not lean to our own understandings of anything in this world in which we must live …..
God bless you !
