The Battlefield of the Mind
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”
(2 Corinthians 10:4-6)
We have been given spiritual weapons to destroy strongholds; strongholds that are in opposition to us and in opposition to God.
The Apostle Paul describes these strongholds in (v.5) … “casting down imaginations (arguments) and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” …
All of these words deal with the realm of the mind: imaginations, arguments, the knowledge of God and thoughts, or taking every thought captive. Apostle Paul has made it clear that the battlefield is the mind. Having pressures in your mind, therefore, is not unnatural or abnormal. It is part of your Christian walk. It is not necessarily a sign you are wrong, or are on the wrong path. It is just part of your salvation experience (bearing one’s cross) as a Christian. It is an affliction that occurs when we take our eyes off of Jesus and begin to dwell in our own heads.
In (Romans 8:7), Paul explains: “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.” Many people trust in education; this is evident in both the secular community and in the body of Christ. But education will not change your mind from being an enemy of God, just as all the knowledge in the world will not save you …. It will just educate your mind the way it is, but having knowledge isn’t having wisdom …
If one has a carnal mind before going to a seminary, they would still emerge with a highly educated carnal mind. The only way to consistently do Kingdom work is to view reality from God’s perspective. This is key when we talk about the “renewing of our minds”… The battle is in the mind. To be of any use in the Kingdom of God, our minds must be transformed. There has to be a total and complete change. In (2 Corinthians), Paul says that God has given us the appropriate weapons. There are many weapons for us to use in this war, but there are three that are the most essential: these are time spent in communion with God’s Word, prayer, and the indwelling power of the Holy Ghost ….
I hear so many people say they want to go into ministry, they want to be used by God. But so many live with unrenewed minds, which are of no use to God. If one’s mind is out of sync with the “mind of Christ” they will seldom be used by God, no matter how much knowledge or availablity they have; because their thoughts conflict with the mind of Christ. In this passage Paul speaks about “strongholds.” Another translation says, “strongholds in our minds.” Although there’s many studies on this by many men of God, but in keeping it simple the three stronghold fall under three categories:
The first one is PRIDE ….
The greatest stronghold of all in the unregenerate human mind is pride ~ self-serving, self-seeking, self-preserving, self-exalting pride. This was lucifer’s demise (Isaiah 14:12), (Luke 10:18). The spirit of pride is over America. This wicked spirit is a result our revolt against the King of England for independence. Know that independence is emity to God. God wants us dependent on Him, and only Him alone.
On Google and Facebook, denominational pride is a stronghold that is most prevalent. We all know those that have pushed their own agenda rather than having a civil discussion as in “iron sharpens iron” (Proverbs 27:17). If it’s all about your church or denomination, then you may have a stronghold of pride in your mind or a “spirit of religiousity” …..
Out of PRIDE proceeds PREJUDICE ….. having your mind made up before you’ve heard the facts. It’s narrow. It’s arrogant. And it’s destructive. It’s evidence must be “mind blowing” to a young Christian or a non-believer as they travel through Christian social media and witness the civil war between the body of Christ.
The third stronghold is PRECONCEPTION …. thinking you know something that you don’t, presuming to have a clear picture of something that you haven’t. Not that I have it all, because certainly I don’t, but I see many on here without the knowledge of God …. Without discernment, wisdom, or solid understanding of God’s Word. Promoting love, peace and happiness is great on Christian social media, but thoroughly immersing oneself in the Word of God is crucial for the times we are living in.
In (Psalm 119:130), we learn: “The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple”. Do you want light and understanding? Or do you want to continue in semi-darkness and ignorance and prejudice? The choice is yours to make. Augustine once said: “Without God we can’t, but without us, He won’t.”
Those of you that have followed me know that I stress a obedience for eternal salvation. We play a part in this, yes “it is by grace that you were saved and not of ourselves” … But we do play a part in our walk in obedience to God’s Word. I believe this is true in almost any realm in which God intervenes on your behalf, whether salvation, healing, or deliverance. God does His part and then it’s up to you to do your part. Your part is to maintain your thoughts in order to hold on to what God has given you. Or as our Lord says: endure ….
We all have choices to make. God gave every living creation “free will”… May you choose Him today and find healing and peace for your hearts, minds, and souls…..
God bless you ….
